Fontaine’s February Auction Lots Soar Far Above Estimates

The February 28, Cataloged Antique Auction was held at Fontaine’s gallery, located at 1485 West Housatonic Street in Pittsfield. Over 400 lots went up for bid, including Tiffany Studios floor lamps, hanging lamps, table lamps and pendants, as well as Tiffany Favrile glass vases and cabinet pieces. Also sold were lamps by Duffner & Kimberly, Handel and Pairpoint, plus many sets of art glass shades.  Sold were five works by Harriet Frishmuth (N.Y./Conn., 1880-1980), best known for her nude female figural creations, plus other important bronzes. Also sold was original paintings, art glass, cameo glass, KPM porcelains, a selection of art pottery, gold and diamond jewelry, sterling silver plus hundreds of related decorative accessories.

With bidders in the gallery, on phones and bidding by the internet, bidding was very active and non-stop throughout the auction day. Some lots soared far above estimated prices. Among the top lots of the auction was lot 163 The Tiffany Studios Moorish-style hall lantern has a tapered cylindrical form, a fiery amber, gold and opaque glass geometric fish scale body, a 12-point feathered crown, domical top and lower door and a border of 25 amber jeweled cabochons (12 on the crown and 9 on the dome above the crown). with an excellent original gilt finish, Estimated: $20,000.00 – $30,000.00 Hammer price with buyer’s premium of: $133,100.00

Signed Tiffany & Co. 18K Gold, Diamond & Gemstone Bracelet lot 21. Large bracelet measures 7.25 in. long x 1.5 in wide,  18K yellow gold, 21 bezel set large carved green gemstones center mounts, which we believe to be either jade or chalcedony, bordered by approximately 406 Pave set diamonds. total weight approx. 117.5g (4.15 oz).  Estimated: $6,000.00 – $8,000.00 Hammer price with buyer’s premium of: $38,720.00

Lot 149 Tiffany Studios Turtleback Hall Lantern. Bronze hanging hall lantern has a rectangular form with pyramidal top, pierced decorated with 3 coils in each top panel, a ring shaped stem hanging from spherical knobs at the top and bottom of the ring; the 4 sides of the shade each have 2 large gold iridescent turtleback glass panels measuring 3.75 in. high x 5.5 in. wide and 4 triangular panels in the hinged lower access trap door. Overall gilt finish is dirty and worn, has latch knob on the bottom door and an original ceiling canopy; on side panel has a single line heat crack. 24 in. high x 8 in. wide x 8 in. deep.  Estimated: $10,000.00 – $15,000.00 Hammer price with buyer’s premium of: $30,250.00

Lot 197 a 24 in. Tiffany Studios Parasol Table Lamp. Large saucer shaped shade has a 12 row geometric pattern in dark mottled green glass, a 0.5 in. bronze flat rim and 1 7/8 in. aperture, shade measures 6.5 in. high; shade is signed “Tiffany Studios New York”. On a bronze “Parasol” style base with wide platform and long stem base having a crossed ribbed design, the riser & 6 socket cluster have 3 leafy arms branching out around the cluster and connection to the top with a 2 in. pierced bronze heat cap; signed “Tiffany Studios New York, 28749”, the base is in excellent condition. Top 3 rows to the shade has restoration to restore minor heat damage to the leading, glass is excellent. 31 in.  Estimated: $40,000.00 – $60,000.00 Hammer price with buyer’s premium of: $48,400.00

Another noteworthy item was a Tiffany Studios Counterbalance Desk Lamp lot 237. Bronze lamp with trumpeted artichoke style base, spherical cluster at the top with one arm branching back and teardrop ball counterweight having a border of 10 large pierced iridescent turtleback chunk glass, the front arm arches up with single socket and 2.25 in. shade fitter at the end; lamp has an angle adjustment cluster at the top of the stem and above the shade, signed on the base “Tiffany Studios New York – 12902”, 17 in. high x 17 in. wide. 10.25 in. dia. domical white glass shade with 15 pulled knobs on the exterior and a deep gold iridescent surface; has chips on the fitter, no chips to the rim, no hairlines or dings, no surface scratches to the finish, signed “L.C.T.”, 5 in.  Estimated:  $7,000.00 – $9,000.00 Hammer price with buyer’s premium of: $29,040.00
