Description:

1863 MODEL SPRINGFIELD RIFLE MUSKET. Type I, 58 caliber with 40" barrel. Lock is dated 1863 behind the hammer and has an American eagle in the front of the hammer and on the bolster along with U. S. over Springfield. Hammer retains all of it's case colors and lockplate has 30 - 40% colors. Barrel is dated 1863 with VP over eagle on the left flat. Bands, nosecap and barrel are bright and shiny like they left the arsenal last week. Stock is like new (may have extra coat of varnish added) except for area on flat opposite lock where there's a burn mark about 3" by 1.5"- no cartouche. Third band is stamped U on the left and N on the right, middle band is stamped U on the left and J on the right, first band has a C stamped on the top left. Rifle comes with bayonet, scabbard and frog. A very hard to improve on example. Estimated Value $2,500 - 3,000.
